In 2021, a bold step changed Nyasha’s life: she left behind a Eurocentric environment as a boarding school teacher to embark on a “Black Sabbatical.” This journey was about more than just travel—it was a conscious decision to reconnect with Black communities across the African diaspora and take a break from the pressures of predominantly white institutions.
Traveling from Colombia to other vibrant Black cultures, this experience deepened her appreciation for the richness of these communities.

Being a part of festivals like Petronio Alvarez, which celebrated Afro-Colombian music and traditions, sparked a passion to create a business, “World to the Whyze.” The mission was to help Black travelers connect meaningfully with Black cultures worldwide.
Her story reminds us of the importance of taking time for personal renewal. Sabbaticals can be a powerful tool for cultural connection, self-discovery, and professional reinvention. For anyone feeling the strain of systemic pressures, this journey encourages us to find our own paths of exploration and growth, especially within our cultural roots.
