Travel can broaden perspectives in ways few other experiences can. For Eve, her journey to Colombia was one such transformative experience that forever altered her approach to travel, connection, and cultural understanding.
Eve had always traveled in familiar circles—whether with church groups or close friends. But when she found herself amidst the vibrant landscapes of Colombia, surrounded by people she had only recently met, she stepped out of her comfort zone and into a world teeming with new possibilities.

At the time, Eve was living in Tampa, Florida, and going through a difficult divorce. She found solace in a Cuban community that welcomed her despite the language barrier. It was through them that she met a Colombian woman who offered to teach her Spanish, opening the door to a deeper connection with Latin American culture.
When her new friend invited her on a month-long trip to Colombia, Eve was initially nervous about traveling with someone she barely knew. However, the opportunity to explore a new country and immerse herself in its culture was too enticing to pass up. Little did she know, this trip would be a turning point in her life.
In Colombia, Eve connected with locals on a personal level, particularly Afro-Colombians, whose pride in their heritage resonated deeply with her. This exposure challenged her previous beliefs and expanded her understanding of identity and culture.
The most profound lesson Eve learned was the power of exposure. Stepping into a different culture made her question her own assumptions and forced her to grow, adapt, and become more empathetic. This journey also changed her approach to travel—no longer about ticking destinations off a list, but about meaningful connections and understanding the lives and stories of the people she met.
Today, Eve carries the lessons from Colombia with her wherever she goes. She started Black Chocó Tours in the Afro-Colombian region of Chocó, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the area. Her travel now is about contributing to the communities she visits and supporting their journeys, just as they have supported hers.
Eve’s trip to Colombia didn’t just change the way she travels—it changed the way she lives.
